In a first, a South-Asian community member has been elected to an integral post of commissioner at the Immigrations Rights in the United States. Kudrat Dutta Chaudhary, who hails from Chandigarh and resides in the United States, is the first South Asian to be appointed to the Commission.

A lawyer by profession, Kudrat Dutta Chaudhary is now the new Commissioner of Immigrants Rights, San Francisco. Among several duties assigned to her, Chaudhary will also deal with people seeking asylum based on gender-based violence.

Who is Kudrat Dutta Chaudhary?

Kudrat Dutta Chaudhary hails from Chandigarh. She pursued her schooling in the city itself and further studied law at the Army Institute of Law. Following her graduation, she pursued her LL.M. from Tufts University, Boston.

Chaudhary's area of focus in her law programme lay in Gender Analysis in International law. Having had the necessary specification, she worked as a Gender Rights Specialist at Robert B. Jobe's Law Office in 2019. As an efficient advocate, she heads the women's march in San Francisco.

Her job as a Commissioner will include advising the Mayor and also the Board of Supervisors on everything concerning immigrant issues in San Francisco county.

The entire elongated process of attaining this position requires an application first, followed by candidates' shortlists and nominations. The nominated candidates are then offered an opportunity to come in front of the Rules Committee and present their candidature. Finally, the Board of Supervisors votes and decides on a name after the committee makes final recommendations on the candidates. Chaudhary attained the prestigious position after the Board voted for her unanimously.

Advocacy for equality

Chaudhary is also an author and has penned books around equality. She served as a researcher on the issue of the rights of surrogates for the Ministry of External Affairs, India.

Having studied Criminal Justice and Criminology at Kings College London, her broadened perspectives on persecution will surely benefit her in her new role. Chaudhary also worked as one of the founders of  'Stop the Shame', a non-violent movement aimed at fighting gender violence. The movement also strived to attain gender parity in SF.

On basis of all her endeavours towards initiatives drawn to equality, the Harvard Kennedy Executive Program welcomed Chaudhary to study Leading Non-Violent Movements for Social Progress.
