Shakira, who recently celebrated her 48th birthday, won the Grammy award for Best Latin Pop Album for “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran" on February 2. Receiving the award from her colleague Jennifer Lopez, the Colombian singer-songwriter thanked her children and dedicated the award “to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country,” she said. “You are loved. You are worth it and I will always fight with you.” This comes days after 201 illegal migrants were deported from the USA to Columbia, after President Donald Trump's tariff threats.

Shakira Honours Immigrant Women In Grammy Acceptance Speech

Shakira took the time to honour “all of those women who work really hard every day to provide for their families.” She concluded, “You are the true she-wolves," referencing her 2009 hit album She Wolf.

The Hips Don't Lie singer showed her love for her sons, Milan and Sasha. She shared how they have been her constants. "So this is for you, too. I want to share this award with my kids, Milan and Sasha, who are here with me. I’m so proud of you guys, for your kind hearts. Thank you for supporting me the way you do. I love you.”

Shakira's album was about her journey after her breakup with ex-Barcelona and Spanish footballer, Gerard Piqué after she allegedly found him cheating on her with the help of strawberry jam. (We are surprised as well!) When she first launched her single in 2023 January, as a collaboration with Argentine producer Bizarrap, she broke as many records as she could and established herself as the powerhouse that she is.

The song became a 'feminist icon' when she took a dig at the World Cup Winner and how she "felt as a hostage" in Spain. The cheating scandal was an assuage but she channelled it for the greater good, describing the creative process as "alchemical".

Immigration Controversy At Grammys?

On the same evening, comedian Trevor Noah made an insensitive joke at which no one laughed. He stated that Shakira “was the greatest thing out of Colombia that isn’t a Class A felony.”

Just down the road, thousands of protesters had gathered to protest President Trump’s aggressive policies against undocumented immigrants and promise of mass deportations.
