Lovato recently revealed her experience as an out-and-proud non-binary person in an interview with GQ Hype Spain on Tuesday. The singer said that she constantly had to educate people and explain why she identified herself with the pronouns, and that it was exhausting. She claimed that she got tired, but that’s the very reason she knows that it’s important to continue creating awareness in the world.

The star wished that there were more gender-neutral spaces, such as sex-assigned washrooms and paperwork. She quoted that, for instance, she had to use the woman’s bathroom even though she completely doesn’t identify with it. She also added that while filling out forms such as government documents or any other forms that ask for gender, she only saw two options—male and female—and feels neither of those made sense to her. She further said that she was conditioned to choose women because there was no other option and hoped that, with time, there would be more options.

The singer-songwriter-actor came out to the world as non-binary in May 2021 and got her pronouns changed to "they/them" officially. She announced the change in her podcast episode 4D with Demi Lovato.

Further added that she had been doing some healing and self-reflection work for the past year and a half. She had the revelation about her non-binary identity through her work.

The report also quoted her saying,

"I feel this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.”

She said in the Spout podcast that messing up with pronouns was common for everyone at some point, especially because people are learning. She added that it was all about being respectful of people's choices. In August 2022, she returned to "she/her" pronouns and stated that she was feeling more feminine. Demi Lovato's Instagram bio reads "she/her/they/them."
