An Indian student is one of four international students who have filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), claiming that their student visas were unfairly and suddenly cancelled. According to a report by Press Trust of India, the students allege that their immigration status was wrongly terminated without proper notice or explanation.
Chinmay Deore from India, along with Xiangyun Bu and Qiuyi Yang from China, and Yogesh Joshi from Nepal, are the students behind the lawsuit. They are all enrolled at public universities in Michigan. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan is representing the students in this legal case. The ACLU also filed an emergency request to stop the deportation of these students while the case is being reviewed.
The students say their F-1 visa status was suddenly removed from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), the system used to track international students. This sudden move has put them at risk of being deported and losing their education and future in the U.S.
Who Is Chinmay Deore? Indian Student Fighting Possible Deportation in US Court
Chinmay Deore is a 21-year-old student originally from India. He is currently studying computer science at Wayne State University in Michigan and expects to graduate in May 2025.
Deore first moved to the US with his family in 2004 on an H-4 dependent visa. After returning to India in 2008, he came back to the US in 2014, again on an H-4 visa. When he was getting close to the age limit for H-4 status, he applied for and was granted an F-1 student visa in May 2022, which allowed him to continue studying in the US.
The ACLU stated that Deore has always followed the rules. He has never been involved in any crime or immigration violation. The only legal issues he has faced are a parking ticket and a speeding ticket, for which he paid the fines promptly. He has also not taken part in any political protests on campus.
The students are now fighting to restore their legal status and continue their education.
