Who Is Adele Roberts

  • Roberts made a tiny replica of the medal for her stoma bag (which she has named Audrey) after the marathon. Roberts shared her achievement on her Instagram handle and expressed her excitement for breaking the record.
  • She thanked everyone who was in the race and mentioned that there were many lovely people on the course. She was so glad that everybody came out to cheer, even though it was raining. "We did it, up yours cancer." She said.
  • In her Instagram post, she wrote, "We’ve just set a #GuinnessWorldRecord for the fastest marathon with an ileostomy." She added that it’s been 12 months since she stopped chemotherapy. "Anything is possible."
  • She dedicated her victory to "those warriors living with cancer, for all the ostomates around the UK, and for the heroes of the NHS." Roberts admitted that running this marathon was a "big ask" for her body to take up the challenge.
  • In a talk with Rani on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour on Friday, she revealed that less than 18 months ago she was lying in a hospital bed recovering from bowel cancer surgery. She explained that 18 months ago she could barely sit up, let alone run a marathon, and there was a long road ahead of her.
  • On the eve of her race, Roberts shared an image of all her marathon equipment on Instagram and hash-tagged it "Rebellious Hope", a phrase that was coined by Dame Deborah James, a journalist who passed away due to bowel cancer last year.
