A chromosomal analysis test revealed Chen Li, whose name has been altered to protect his identity, is biologically female after 33 years of identifying as a male.

Chen, who is from a small town in the Sichuan province of southwest China, underwent surgery to treat his inconsistent urination throughout puberty. He has experienced recurrent blood in his urine every day for more than 20 years since that time.

He was diagnosed with appendicitis after experiencing stomach pain that persisted for more than four hours. The symptoms persisted, nevertheless, even after therapy.

According to the South China Morning Post, last year, a medical check-up revealed the true cause of his condition. He had female sex chromosomes. He experienced blood in his urine and abdominal discomfort every month as a result of his menstrual cycle.

The diagnosis reportedly shocked him and he went to a Guangzhou hospital that specialises in treating genital problems. Upon further examination, it was found that he also had female reproductive organs including a uterus and ovaries. His check-up report indicated that his levels of androgen, the male sex hormone, were below average. Contrary to this, his levels of female sex hormones and ovarian activity were comparable to those of healthy adult women. Ultimately, he was diagnosed as intersex, with both male and female reproductive organs.

Over the past 30 years, he has identified as a man and sought the removal of his female reproductive organs. On June 6, he underwent a three-hour surgery and was released from the hospital 10 days later. In the opinion of the experts who treated Li, his condition usually results in psychological trauma rather than physical health issues.
