This 18-year-old Chinese girl named Yang is living in her workplace bathroom due to the high cost of living.
An 18-year-old Chinese woman has gone viral on the internet for turning her workplace bathroom into her home due to financial constraints. Yang, who belongs to a rural family in Hunan, earns just ₹31,776 (2,700 yuan) a month at a furniture store in Zhuzhou which is way below the city’s average of ₹88,266 (7,500 yuan).
With rent running between ₹9,415 (800 yuan) and ₹21,184 (1,800 yuan), affording a place wasn’t an economically viable option for her, as reported by the South China Morning Post.
With only a few options available, Yang struck a deal with her boss to rent the office bathroom, which is just six square meters for ₹588 (50 yuan) a month. She shares her daily life on Douyin, a Chinese social media app, where 16K followers watch her as she washes clothes in the bathroom, dries them on the rooftop, and clears the space for customers during work hours.
Yang’s story has stirred conversations online, with many praising her resilience. One user wrote, “Not for me to criticise someone trying their best. I wish the young lady well.”
Another added, “Making the best of her circumstances—very commendable.” Others, however, highlighted the inequality, with one commenting, “This makes me sad. There should be more equity in the world for people willing to work hard. All the while many who refuse to work get fully funded lifestyles."
Despite her challenging situation, Yang stays hopeful. She dreams of saving enough to buy a home or a car for herself someday. Her story is a testament of the challenges low-income workers face in high-cost cities, sparking discussions about economic inequality.
