Swapna Liddle on the layers of history that make Delhi

/

Swapna Liddle was bombarded with questions after she wrapped up a session with author Omair Ahmed. Swapna Liddle, convenor at Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage and an author was at the World Book Fair Delhi to talk about her new book and discuss 'Delhi as a Historical City'. A tall guy in a coat walked up to her and told her "You are saying Delhi is a Muslim city." He seemed passionate if not upset and said, "Delhi is a Hindu city." He went on to ask her if she would write about Delhi being a Hindu city in her next book.

Her love for Delhi and Shahjahanabad, now known as Old Delhi is evident when you listen to her talk. Her love for the city is infectious.

Liddle tried hard to smile off the question but the man stood until he was asked to move away from the frame for us to start the interview.

Swapna Liddle developed a love for history when she was in school. She credits it back to her amazing history teacher. The love escalated when she pursued history in her higher education as well. Liddle boasts of a PhD on Delhi's cultural and intellectual life in the 19th century. Inspite of her academic background, Liddle works towards simplifying history and making it accessible to all. Her first book Delhi: 14 History Walks is a handbook for anyone who wants to explore Delhi in a never before seen way. The book itself is a guide which will take you around Delhi, uncovering places like, Mehrauli Village, Chandni Chowk, Qutub Minar complex and so on. She conducts a number of heritage walks in the city to raise awareness about what remains of the rich culture and heritage of Delhi, along with INTACH.
