Student Suicides, 9-Year-Old Girl Dies By Suicide

You must have heard that marriage is a strong bond of love and companionship between two people who promise to support each other in tough times. But do you know that factors like looks, bank balance, and caste also play an important role in bringing two people together? That's exactly what became a reason for a girl to take her own life.

A woman died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda. Reason? She was getting rejected multiple times for marriage due to her blemished face. She had also been undergoing face treatment for the last 10 years. The girl's brother informed a news publication that her sister had slipped into depression because of her blemished face. The mother said that she had always been a very bright student but couldn't digest the humiliation she was facing at the hands of potential suitors who would reject her and decided to take this extreme step, as per a report.

Woman Ends Life After She Was Rejected By Many Suitors, Is Marriage The Only Goal In Life ?

The incident speaks volumes about the amount of importance Indian society gives to women and their skin color. The girl, despite being so bright, derived her confidence from how she looked and the place she held in the marriage market. Also, one wonders why does society make marriage the most important milestone in a woman's life? A bright girl can easily excel in her career, get a job or become an entrepreneur and lead her life the way she wants to. Why does she have to go through such a harrowing time proving her worth?

Something similar took place last week in Surat when a 25-year-old girl killed herself because her in-laws used to allegedly torture her over her dark complexion and demand for dowry. Why is our society so obsessed with fair skin? Why are we still under the colonial influence and discriminate against those who have darker complexion? Why do we reduce the identities of people, especially women, to nothing but their complexion-a factor which is not even in our control?  It is really unfortunate that we discriminate over skin colour and dowry even in today’s day and age.
