Noida Brothers Kill Woman Over Failed Marriage

On investigation, police reportedly revealed the brothers strangulated their sister to death in Greater Noida and dumped the body in river Hindon. According to police, the accused were unhappy with the woman’s failed marriage and alleged drinking habit. The woman is identified as Nazma. Nazma had four children and was separated from her spouse for the past one year and eventually got addicted to alcohol. The two children stayed with Nazma's parents and rest with her husband. Nazma's family was so upset over her failed marriage and drinking habits, that her brothers strangulated her to death after a heated conversation, as police revealed.

What may the reason be, violence cannot be the solution to any problem. Everybody has familial problems and they could be sorted out. But the brothers choosing the way of violence is to be condemned. Why failed marriages bug families so much? No person would like to have a broken marriage. If it is happening, then the problems might from both ends. Why women should suffer alone? Failed marriages are considered taboo in Indian society. 'Ghar Bethi hai' is a common notion used for women who get separated from their husbands. Society blames women for everything that might have gone wrong in the marriage, they are heavily disrespected for taking such a gutsy step. This impacts the family, the family being part of society constantly considers how society thinks and what they will say if the daughter's marriage is failed. Above all have drinking problems too, which is solely believed that only men can have the alcohol problem. A woman having it means she is the main culprit in the failed marriage.

Women endured their husbands' drinking problems eternally, hardly anyone chooses to divorce. In fact, many women continue to live with alcoholic men citing the future of their children. In this case, Nazma was an alcoholic and his brother couldn't take it. I don't say men should also endure women's alcoholic behaviour, or let it go. But murder cannot be an answer to these problems. Did anyone try to help Nazma to get psychiatric aid with her problems?

Women are usually neglected, and once she starts claiming her authority she is treated as a lost cause. Why Nazma was treated that way? This could be clearly considered a case of honour killing. The woman's failed marriage and drinking habits are a few of the elements that adversely impact honour of the family according to a so-called patriarchal value system. Her brothers saved honour and Nazma became the target of it. Is a family's image worth more than a woman's life?

Worst is when Police found Nazma's body, the brothers made a fake complaint of Nazma missing. Isn't that insensitive? This shows how the family behaves when it comes to honour and respect in society. A failed marriage became a reason for a woman's death. In India, millions of women break marriages in hope of a better life, what if that life is ended by a family member?
