Former Supreme Court Judge and Chairman of the Press Council of India, Markandey Katju, has again landed himself in controversy. This time, Katju has found himself in hot water for his interaction with a Pakistani girl on Twitter.
The woman, who claimed to be a follower of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN), had posted a photo of Pakistan politician Nawaz Sharif. Katju commented, "Tumhe kya ho gaya hai, Zahara? Ek chor ki tasveer laga di." The woman replied that this "isn’t your problem" and that it was her wish to support a political party. The conversation didn’t end there.
Markandey Katju Comment To Pak Woman
In reply, Katju wrote, "You’re beautiful, Zahra," and the woman responded with, "I don’t take it as a compliment!" Katju went on to comment, "But what wrong did I do, Zahra? If I admire a beautiful garden from a distance, it does not mean I am trespassing on it. If I smell a fragrant rose, it does not mean I am plucking it off." When the woman further lashed out at him, Katju wrote, "Why are you so unkind to me, Zahra? I had only praised you." This interaction happened on April 9, 2023. This totally gives us a creepy vibe.
This is not the first time that Katju has been under fire for his problematic statements. He has been repeatedly making sexist and misogynistic statements over the years.
In 2020, he was in the news for one of his sexist comments. In an interaction with a woman, Katju wrote, "Not sleepy?" followed by, "I thought good girls go to bed early." The former judge received heavy flak for being creepy and sexist from netizens.
When the entire nation was outraged over the Harthras case, Katju presented an irrational explanation for the increasing number of rapes in the country. He explained that "sex is a natural urge in men," which could be quenched through marriage. However, with rising unemployment, men are unable to get married, and this sexual deprivation is making them commit heinous crimes like rape. He defended his statement, saying that he wasn’t justifying rape, and went on to state that solving the unemployment problem is the best way to prevent rape.
In 2015, Katju wrote on his Facebook that he considers Shazia Ilmi more beautiful than Kiran Bedi. He further stated that if BJP had made Ilmi their CM candidate, they would have won the Delhi elections because people vote for beautiful faces. He later justified his statement by claiming, "Can’t an old man admire beautiful women?" However, he was thrashed by several women on social media for his indecent statement.
When a man of such high stature engages in such despicable behaviour, what kind of example is he setting for society? Women of all age groups already receive several creepy DMs on their social media. When a former judge of the Supreme Court of India indulges in such a disgusting act, it is only normalising creepy online behaviour. It might encourage more men to behave in creepy ways and harass women online.
Despite Katju proving to be a sexist and misogynist several times, he has never really been penalised for his problematic statement. People have been watching this for years, and every time he says something controversial, there is severe backlash online, which ends up dying in a few days. Then Katju is almost forgotten until he comes up with another troublesome statement.
When something like this happens repeatedly and the offender is not held accountable for his actions by the law, it gives a highly misleading message to potential offenders among the public. How does he always manage to walk away with a get-away card? So, does this mean that men with power and influence can get away with their misdeeds? When are we really going to hold offenders accountable for their offences?
