In the year 2022, India celebrated its 75th year of attaining independence from the Britishers.  This year was also reportedly dedicated to women and alluded to a change in the mentality towards the womenfolk. However, when we look back, the violence against women has increased.

The national capital alone recorded a 17% rise in crimes against women in the first six months of the year 2022, as per the Delhi Police data. Over the six years from 2016 to 2021, there was a 26.35% rise in crime against women in India, as per a report.

For the year 2022, the violence against women is taking a more heinous form- rapes, sexual assaults, intimate partner violence, acid attacks, and more. If we look back through the entire year, here are a few spine-chilling crimes that shook the entire country.

Dwarka Acid Attack On Teenage Girl

On the morning of December 14, a 17-year-old girl's life changed entirely, when a boy on a bike threw acid on her face. The attack resulted in injuries to both of the teenager’s eyes with 8% burn on the face. The girl was walking to school accompanied by her 13-year-old sister in Delhi's Dwarka District. The motive of the attack was ‘revenge’ as per the main accused Sachin Arora's (20) admission. He wanted to avenge the girl for calling off their friendship a few months ago. Arora plotted the plan with his friends Virendra Singh (22) and Harshit Agarwal (19). The entire episode and the agony of the survivor were captured in the CCTV footage which has since then gone viral on the internet, leaving viewers in shock. 

Uttarakhand Murder And Forced Prostitution Case

Ankita Bhandari, an employee with a Rishikesh-based hotel went missing under mysterious circumstances on September 19. Later, she was found murdered in a remote part of Uttarakhand town. As the news of the girl's death went viral, people demanded justice for her. The three accused were detained in the case, among them one was a son of the former Uttarakhand minister. Bhandari was brutally murdered and her body was dumped into the Ganges by Pulkit Arya, an owner of the resort. Reportedly, she was murdered for rejecting Arya’s sexual advances. The 19-year-old was also allegedly forced into prostitution by the owner. 

Intimate Partner Violence Case Of Shraddha Walkar

The Aftab Poonawala case grappled the entire country due to the cruel nature of the crime. Shraddha Walkar, a 27-year-old woman was murdered and her body was sawed into 35 pieces by her live-in partner. The accused Aaftab Amin Poonawala allegedly strangled Walkar and dumped her body parts across the city over several days during dusk. He kept the body pieces in a fridge for almost three weeks at his home in south Delhi’s Mehrauli locality. During that, it is reported that he was dating other girls. Earlier too, the Walkar was abused and assaulted, despite one complaint in 2020 claiming that Poonawala was abusing and blackmailing her for months. Since the murder came to light, every day the case had a new revelation. 

Chandigarh University MMS Leak Case

Chandigarh University MMS Leak denotes how crime against women can evolve over time. Massive protests erupted at the University crying for justice over alleged leaked objectionable videos of female students from the hostel. Nearly 60 students' videos while having their baths at the hostel were leaked. The videos were allegedly shared by a female student with her boyfriend. A 23-year-old youth from Shimla, Sunny Mehta is considered the main accused, another 31-year-old was also detained in the case. 

Violence Over Rejection Case Of Aradhana

Aradhana’s murder came to light on November 15, after a body was found inside a well located at Paschimi village in Azamgarh district, Uttar Pradesh. The rejection of Aradhana did not go well with Prince Yadav and decided to take revenge. Prince Yadav, the main accused took the help of his parents, cousin Sarvesh, and other family members to murder Aradhana, who was in her mid-20s. out of resentment because she married someone else and not him.
