John Cena Sports Skirt And Heels: Time To Redefine Masculinity

Clothes and looks determine nothing but a person’s choice. It is an expression of a person’s personality, not their gender or behaviour. It is high time that we stop putting labels on things and restrict their usage. Everything should be equally distributed among various genders.

Today, the internet was smitten by the pictures of Wrestler and Hollywood actor John Cena’s looks. He sported a skirt, thigh-length stockings and heels while out shooting his next film. Internet users were left wondering why Cane was wearing a feminine outfit. But you know what? If this picture leaves you shocked, maybe it is time for a reality check.

It is not the first time that a man has sported feminine clothes. Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has often appeared in public wearing skirts. Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel flaunted a leather skirt at an award show in 2003. Jared Leto too proudly wore skirts and heels and tweeted “Real Men Wear Skirts.”

Bill Porter too takes every award show as his opportunity to express himself through feminine dresses. He once wrote, “My goal is to be a walking piece of political art every time I show up. To challenge expectations. What is masculinity? What does that mean?”

Examples are many. But the point is are we ready to accept?

In our society, cross-dressing is still not a common phenomenon. Women might be accepted adorning themselves with male dresses but men wearing feminine dresses are rarely considered sane.

Wearing feminine dresses, accessories or cosmetics draws criticism for men. They are shamed for losing their masculinity by doing or wearing anything that is feminine. Overall, feminine products and habits are seen as symbols of weakness. And hence, it is said that it doesn’t suit robust masculinity.

Moreover, boys wearing female clothes or cosmetics are considered mentally unstable or belong to a non-binary identity.

But my question is if a man wears skirts, is it necessary that he is non-binary? Can a man not be a man by wearing feminine clothes? Why do we assume that men lose masculinity by wearing or behaving femininely?

In fact, who labelled certain dresses or behaviour as feminine or masculine? Who decided what suits a woman and a man?

Let us understand that attire or looks do not determine the gender of a person. The masculinity or femininity of a person is determined by their choice. It is a person’s choice with which pronoun they want to be addressed.

Moreover, masculinity is not about clothes but about being independent without harassing or oppressing women. Masculinity is in understanding that women deserve respect and equality. While the femininity of a woman makes them value their gender which is otherwise oppressed and overlooked by society.

So dear society! Clothes and looks determine nothing but a person’s choice. It is an expression of a person’s personality, not their gender or behaviour. It is high time we stop labelling things and restrict their usage. Everything should be equally distributed among various genders. Equality is in understanding that no one should be deprived of the right to access what they want, of course without hurting anyone. And if things like cross-dressing, equality and women empowerment hurt us, we need to change our mindsets rather than shaming or blaming others.
