Society has this obsession with tagging women, for every little thing in their lives. Be it the decision to work, to marry or not to marry, to have kids or not, women are labelled in every phase of their lives. Why is it so important for society to condition women to follow certain rules and regulations? It is almost as if free-thinking women are a threat to society, and the only way to contain the threat is to label them a bitch, a slut, a whore, and whatnot.

Bitch has become a word so callously thrown around, confining women based on their attitude, their choices, their lifestyle, and basically their entire life. Society has this need to take control of women's life, expecting them to duly follow, and not take charge of their own life. The minute women question the norms, they are labeled a bitch. Indian society just doesn't seem to approve of the personal choices of women, and they stereotype time and again. For all the positive things women stand for - Independent, Outspoken, Charming, Strong, society has seemed to collectively come up with a word, Bitch.

12 Things Women Get Called A Bitch For: Sounds Familiar?

Bitch is a very sexist derogatory slang used to demean women and place a question mark on their character. Then why do we so carelessly use it? Why does the usage of the term come with no consequences whatsoever? The word is ever so often cloaked in form of a joke, to put women in a place society seems fit. And I think it's high time, we call people out on the usage of this word. Here are 20 things women get called a bitch for, and it won't surprise you.

  1. For Choosing To Be Independent-  Any girl that chooses to be independent and make choices of her own, and seems too big to fit into societal expectations is often called a Bitch. For the sole reason that she is the master of her life and refuses to give society the reigns.
  2. Having Too Many Male Friends- 'That bitch sleeps with everyone' is a phrase that is heard so often, for the sole reason of having male friends. How is that fair? While boys are appreciated as a ladies' man, a Casanova, a stud for having too many girlfriends, on the other hand, women get labeled as a Bitch, a whore, a slut, see where the problem lies?
  3. For Choosing Her Career - How can a woman dream bigger than just finding a man and settling down? How can someone dream of having a career over marriage? She must be a Bitch.
  4. The Choice To Stay Single- It is almost as if society refuses to acknowledge a woman’s existence until she has a partner in her life. The choice to stay single either gets you the Bitch label or the Bechari label where the society believes you are not even good enough to be able to find a partner.
  5. For Being Opinionated- A girl is told all her life, to be meek, soft-spoken, and obedient. Any woman who refuses to do so, and is capable of speaking her mind and is opinionated is a Bitch, because otherwise who does that?
  6. For Running A Business- Being a Boss is a bitch move, worse if you are not easily manipulated and stand your ground. Society often times even refuses to believe that women can be bosses and successfully run a company. What are women if they don't come next to their fathers or husbands?
  7. For Choosing To Not Embrace Motherhood- Who other than cruel bitches chooses not to have kids? Isn't the whole purpose of a woman's life to be able to bear kids and continue the lineage of the family they are married into? Only a Bitch chooses otherwise.
  8. The Choice To Friendzone- It is appalling how many women are blamed and called a bitch just because they don't share the same romantic interest in someone. The audacity a woman must have to refuse a guy, when male attention is all that validates their existence, surely does make her a bitch.
  9. For Dressing Up Like She Wishes To- Women choosing to wear anything other than a salwar Kameez or a Saree, is unacceptable. Jeans, shorts, midis, who is she baring her skin for? Only a 'Characterless Bitch' is capable of doing such a thing.
  10. For Having Relationships-  Any relationship, outside of marriage is seen as an abomination. Marriage to a complete stranger is the societal norm. Boyfriends, love marriages, live-In? All alien concepts even in the 21st century. If you are a woman with liberal thoughts on the above, you are a bitch, no questions asked.
  11. For Enjoying Sex- The Sole Purpose of a woman's sex life? To provide sexual pleasure for a man, or bear his babies. Female pleasure, orgasms, a woman who believes in her own pleasure? There is no such thing as a woman enjoying sex. Sex is an act tailor-made only for women. Any woman who thinks otherwise- A Bitch.
  12. For Just Existing- Sarcasm or not, women get labeled for everything. Any woman that stands tall against society's narrow mind, is termed a Bitch. It seems like women don't even have the freedom to breathe, let alone make any decisions. So more often than not it seems like women get called a Bitch, for just existing.

It is clear that women are not getting around the word anytime soon. If being an independent woman and standing for what you deem right is a bitch move then why don't we just reclaim the title and be proud bitches? For years the society has tried to stopped women from making their own choices and has targetted women for not following the "rules". A word or any label should not stop women from achieving what they desire in life.
