Javelin Thrower Annu Rani Breaks Her Own National Record

Indian javelin thrower Annu Rani broke her own national record at the Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championships on Monday. However, she just missed the target required for qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics.

Rani managed to get hold of the gold medal after achieving the 63.24m mark at her third attempt. Earlier, she had attained a record of 62.43m at the World Championships in Doha in 2019. In order to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, she will have to go past the 64m mark.

Annu Rani Has Represented India in Many Tournaments

Annu Rani has represented India on many platforms and has won many laurels. She had won a bronze in the 2014 Asian Games and a silver in the Asian Championships in 2019. Annu has also won a bronze at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships held in Orissa with a record throw of 57.32 metres. She improved her previous national records at the Indian Grand Prix 1 in February, and the Indian GP 2 earlier this month. Besides this, she has also been the winner of the Sportstar Aces Sportswoman of the Year Award in Athletics in 2020.

Meanwhile, other javelin throwers such as Sanjana Choudhary of Rajasthan grabbed second place after Rani at the Fed Cup with a best throw of 54.55m. Kumari Sharmila from Haryani came in third with her record of 50.78m.

Amongst other sports, Bhavani Devi became the first Indian fencer to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. She had clinched the gold medal at the Tournoi Satellite Fencing Championship held in Reykjavik, Iceland by defeating Sarah Jane from Great Britain.
