Who Is Nithya Raman? Indian-Origin Los Angeles Leader Running For Mayor

Nithya Raman, an Indian-origin leader, announced her candidacy for mayor of Los Angeles, California, in 2026, challenging incumbent Karen Bass. She aims to address matters like housing, homelessness, government accountability, and public safety. While Raman and Bass have a long history of being cooperative, this election highlights some of the policy gaps and bolder governance needed.

Raman asserts that LA will need to think of innovative ways to solve the question of affordability and intrinsic structural challenges, even if it means confronting the incumbent mayor.

She enters the pack at the last minute and will now be part of numerous major contestants in the June 2 primaries as she battles against other contestants, such as organisers and businessmen.

Who is Nithya Raman?

Nithya Raman is the daughter of Indian immigrant parents from Kerala. From her early years, she was surrounded by stories of diverse cultural identities, immigration, and concepts about community resilience. 

Raman is a notable figure in a political environment that has traditionally been dominated by veteran politicians and money, with her training at Harvard and Indian ancestry, combined with her strong grassroots leadership style. 

From Housing Advocate to Public Figure

Raman’s journey started in housing advocacy. Yet over time, she came to partner with the community, including neighbours and various tenant groups, as she continued to fight back against displacement and stand up for people’s rights.

As instability and homelessness continued to rise in Los Angeles, her work also continued to gain more recognition and propel her into her future political career.

One of the more surprising transitions in politics from activist circles to traditional office-holding positions occurred for Raman when she won her seat on the Los Angeles City Council in 2020.

She defeated a longtime incumbent through a campaign backed by strong grassroots organising, relying heavily on small donations and volunteers.

Nithya Raman mainly focuses on making housing affordable and helping solve the issue of homelessness. As a city council member, her position on affordable and effective options for the homeless is quite clear.
