The Thiruvalla police had booked a case against them after Sreeja presented a controversial programme through the channel, which allegedly mentioned offensive language against the members of a particular community. Aired against the backdrop of a controversy triggered by the Pala Bishop’s comment over narcotics jihad, it had drawn widespread criticism from different quarters, including Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan.
Sreeja Prasad was granted bail by the Kerala High Court in May 2020. The judge while granting her bail said, “some of the abusive and unparliamentary comments may not come within the four corners of Section 67 of the Information Technology Act. In such situations, the State has to wake up and legislate appropriate enactment to curtail the social media war.”
According to reports, a news item published by Prasad was lascivious in nature. Her act allegedly amounted to a crime under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act. When the case went for hearing, her legal representative told the court that she is regretting some of the statements she made in the news item published on social media. She made such a statement in response to abusive and sexual language hurled against her by different people on social media.
