In a close fight, Sarabjit Kaur defeated AAP's Anju Katyal and was elected as Chandigarh's mayor.

Who Is Sarabjit Kaur: On January 8, Sarabjit Kaur was elected as the mayor of Chandigarh by its Municipal Corporation house. Out of 36 members of the Municipal Corporation house, only 28 votes were cast as Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) refrained from voting. Kaur, who is affiliated to the Bharatiya Janata Party, won by 14 votes and became the mayor of Chandigarh.

It was a close fight between BJP and Aam Admi Party as its candidate Anju Katyal got 13 votes. The AAP councillors alleged that the BJP had been favoured in the counting process. They also tried to allegedly stop the new mayor Sarabjit Kaur from addressing the House.

Out of the 36 members, seven councillors of Congress and one from SAD did not vote in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) mayoral election. Congress did not field any candidate for the post.

Amidst this ruckus, the BJP councillors surrounded Kaur's chair and later, marshals were called in and councillors from both the parties were removed from the house. BJP's Dalip Sharma also won by 15 votes against AAP's Prem Lata, who got 13 votes, thus becoming the Senior Deputy Mayor.

BJP city president Arun Sood in an interview with The Indian Express had said, "We are sure that it is our party that will make its Mayor Saturday."

Who Is Sarabjit Kaur?

Sarabjit Kaur Dhillon, the new mayor, is a councillor from ward number 6. Kaur has studied till the second year of a Bachelor of Arts course. Her entry to politics was only after the ward became a reserved seat for women candidates. She lives in Mani Majra.

Before her, the seat was occupied by her husband Jagtar Singh Dhillon. It is said that BJP chose a Jat Sikh candidate to represent the party keeping in mind that elections are around the corner in the state of Punjab. While her opponent Anju Katyal is a businesswoman, Kaur is a housewife.
