Who Is Sara Duterte-Carpio: The eldest daughter of the President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte has filed the candidacy for the vice-president's position. This news from her spokesperson ends countless speculations about the plan of her political party for the 2022 elections after the party's original candidate withdrew.
Mayor Cristina Gracia-Frasco in a statement on Facebook confirmed that Mayor In-say Sara Duterte has filed "her Certificate of Candidacy for Vice President under Lakas-CMD (party)."
In the Philippines, the election for president and vice-president is separate. "It is a surprise," said Antonio La Vina, who is the professor of law and politics at the Ateneo de Manila University to the Reuters.
The decision of Duterte-Carpio to run for the second-highest position has come as a surprise for many as they were expecting her to run for president's position. After this move, the political party of Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who is running for the presidential race immediately move his support to Duterte-Carpio.
Not just that her 76-year-old father who is the current president has been barred from running for the second time for six years in the presidential race. He is facing an investigation by the International Criminal Court for the so-called war on drugs.
Who is Sara Duterte-Carpio?
The 43-year-old, the eldest daughter of the current president, is a lawyer. In 2007, she entered politics as her father's vice mayor and in no time voted as the first woman mayor of Davao, which is 1,000 kilometres away from the capital city Manila in 2010.
No stranger to the functioning of the president as she served as the first lady after her father's annulled marriage. She has a record of punching a court official and her children are called (nicknames) Sharkie, Stingray and Stonefish.
Earlier this year, in an interview with Reuters, she said, "I made a chart where I listed the whys and why-nots before I decided that I am not going to run."
