The Tamil courtroom drama Gargi, in which Sai Pallavi plays the title role, was released in theatres on July 15 to overwhelmingly positive reviews, with some critics and viewers even declaring it the best Tamil movie of the year. Gargi is a gripping story about a woman fighting for justice. The life of Gargi, a teacher at a private school, is followed throughout the film. Gargi is from a low-income family that also includes her mother, who sells handmade rice flour; her younger sister, Akshara, a sixth grader; and her father, Brahmananda, who is portrayed by R. S. Shivaji and works as a security guard at an apartment complex. A nine-year-old girl is suddenly sexually harassed at the apartment where her father works.
After being held by the police for his alleged involvement in a case of gang rape of a minor, the movie follows Gargi's battle to clear his father of the allegation. They are being represented in court by a lawyer named Indrans Kaliyaperumal, played by Kaali Venkat, who decides to do so because he has nothing to lose in terms of his reputation.
Critics have applauded Sai Pallavi's performance and referred to the movie as a "one-woman show." The movie's director, Gautham Ramachandran, created the script with Hariharan Raju.
