From Vikrant Rona To Cobra: 5 Must-Watch Tamil Movie Releases In 2022

The year 2022 as of now has been great for regional films, with some huge blockbuster movies like Vikram, KGF Chapter 2 and Beast. While the bar of expectations for the upcoming movies is set real high, one look at the line and you know that regional films still have many aces up their sleeves, that'll charm the pan-India audience.

Tamil cinema is gearing up for one of its biggest releases ever, with Mani Ratnam's ambitious multi-starrer Ponniyin Selvan series kickstarting this year.

Ponniyin Selvan 1

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman, and R. Parthiban are coming together for part one of Mani Ratnam's new historic film series Ponniyin Selvan.

Based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's classic novel about the life of Raja Raja Chozhan I, this movie will be the first in a two-part series and will focus on the Chola empire. The movie is expected to release on September 30, 2022.

Vikrant Rona

Written and directed by Anup Bhandari the action drama film ">Vikrant Rona will see actor Sudeep in lead. B Ajaneesh Loknath has composed the music for the film, which is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 28, 2022.

The film is set in the 70s and revolves around mysterious deaths in a tropical rainforest, that lead to beliefs in involvement of supernatural elements. The film also features Nirup Bhandari, Neetha Ashok and Jacqueline Fernandez in key roles.

Cobra

This thriller featuring Vikram in the lead will mark the debut of KGF series fame Kannada actor Srinidhi Shetty in Tamil cinema.  The movie also stars Irfan Pathan, Miya George, Roshan Mathew, Sarjano Khalid, Padmapriya, Mohammad Ali Baig, Kaniha, Mirnalini Ravi, Meenakshi, and K. S. Ravikumar in supporting parts.

In Cobra, Vikram portrays the role of a mathematician and dons seven different looks during the movie, which may take his fans back to his performance in Anniyan. The movie will get its theatrical release on August 11, 2022.

Thiruchitrambalam

This musical-drama is led by actor Dhanush and also features Nithya Menen, Raashi Khanna and Priya Bhavani Shankar. The film has been directed by Mithran Jawahar, who has also co-written the film with Varsha Bharath, Shreyas Srinivasan.

Anirudh Ravichander has composed music and score for the film, while cinematography has been handled by Om Prakash and editing by Prasanna GK. The film is set for an August 18 release.

Yashoda

Directed by Hari-Harish, this sci-fi thriller film is set to release on August 12. It features Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead and has been simultaneously shot in Tamil and Telugu. The movie also features Unni Mukundan and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar.
