The fifth season of the critically-acclaimed show will start production in July this year.

According to Variety, the series is geared to start filming in North London’s Elstree Studios, under strict COVID-19 protocols.

Imelda Staunton plays the Queen

After Claire Foy and Olivia Colman Imelda, Staunton will take over the role of Queen Elizabeth II in the series. Season four of the series saw Emma Corrin as Princess Diana and Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher, capturing the 80s that were both personally and politically tumultuous for the British royal family. Both the actors won a Golden Globe Award for their performances. Read about it here.

The new season will focus on the time between the 1990s and early 2000s. Variety recently reported that Dominic West ( best known for his role in The Affair) is in talks to play the role of Prince Charles.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty The Queen,” the creator Peter Morgan told Deadline about roping in Harry Potter franchise actor Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II. “Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman,” he added

Speaking on This Morning in October last year, Staunton said that she had already started working on the role by listening and watching footage of the monarch, ahead of filming in summer 2021.

Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret and Tenet star Elizabeth Debicki Princess Diana have been officially confirmed for the series. Rumours have it that Fleabag’s Andrew Scott is being considered for Prime Minister Tony Blair for The Crown’s next two seasons, according to The Sun. Meanwhile, production on the sixth and final season is expected to begin in 2022.

The UK is currently under lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the restrictions will begin to ease on April 12.
