Ram Gopal Varma-Inaya Sultana Video: Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is being trolled on social media for a viral video in which he is seen dancing with an actor named Inaya Sultana. The video was apparently shot at Sultana's birthday party. Varma and the actor can be seen dancing to the song "Hai Rama" from the 1995 film Rangeela, which was directed by the former. Many have taken objection to the viral dance video and have also questioned the director's conduct and exploitation of wannabe actors in the the Indian film industry.
Varma is a known Bollywood filmmaker who is famous for helming hit films like Rangeela, Satya, Bhoot and Sarkar. Sultana, on the other hand will be making her debut with the upcoming Telugu film Aevum Jagat, directed by Dinesh Narra, featuring Kiran Geya and Prakruthivanam Prasad. She will apparently also star in one of Varma's upcoming projects. Read more on her here.
When the video started circulating on social media last weekend, Varma tweeted that it was not him in the video. "I once again want to clarify that the guy in this video is not me and the Girl in Red is not @inaya_sultana and I swear this on American President JOE BIDEN," he wrote. However, on August 24, he went on to share a photo with Sultana, writing, "With the beautiful @inaya_sultana my dancing partner in the viral video."
Then on August 26, Sultana "officially" shared yet another video of the same dance with Ram Gopal Varma.
Why is social media upset?
Many people have called Varma's dance with Sultana obscene, raising concern over how the director touches the actor throughout the clip. Did the actor consent to be touched in such a manner? What about the power dynamics between the two, with Varma being a very senior and powerful name in the industry, and Sultana being a newbie? Can this dance be called inappropriate conduct on Varma's part then? These are just some of the questions Twitter users have raised.
