I Stand With You: Priyanka Chopra Voices Her Support For Iranian Women

The chant of "Jin, jiyan, azaadi" has been echoed across the globe as the protests against Mahsa Amini's death and Iran's strict laws spread.

Actor Priyanka Chopra voiced her support for the Iranian women protesting the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She died while in the custody of the morality police after she was detained for allegedly wearing her headscarf improperly.

Following Amini’s death, thousands of Iranians took to the streets to protest against the government’s strict rules for hijabs and clothing. The protest turned global and women around the world showed solidarity with the Iranian protestors.

Following in the footsteps of protesting Iranian women, some women around the globe cut off their hair in public and chanted slogans such as "Jin, jiyan, azaadi", which is Kurdish is "Women, life, freedom".

Priyanka Chopra Supports Iranian Women

Chopra is one of the many celebrities to extend her support to the protesters and took to social media to share her statement. She wrote, “Women in Iran and around the world are standing up and raising their voices, publicly cutting their hair and many other forms of protest for Mahsa Amini, whose young life was taken away so brutally by the Iranian Mortality Police for wearing her hijab ‘improperly’”.

Chopra added that she was “in awe” of the Iranian women’s “courage” and “purpose”. She wrote, “It is not easy to risk your life, literally, to challenge the patriarchal establishment and fight for your rights”.

The actor emphasised the importance of ensuring the movement would have a lasting effect. She implored people to “hear their call, understand the issues, and then join in with our collective voices”. Chopra asked people to stay informed and be vocal so that the voices of Iranian women could not be forced to stay silent.

Chopra ended her message by writing, “I stand with you. Jin, jiyan, azaadi… Women, life, freedom.”

Women Show Solidarity With Iranian Women

The chant of "Jin, jiyan, azaadi" has been echoed across the globe as the protests against Mahsa Amini's death and Iran's strict laws spread. Recently, Swedish member of the European parliament Abir Al-Sahlani showed her solidarity with Iranian women in a powerful statement. The MP cut her hair during a speech in EU assembly and called for action.

People in France, Afghanistan and the United States also took to the streets and held signs and shouted slogans. Women in Afghanistan held banners outside the Iranian embassy. The banners read, “Iran has risen. Now it’s our turn!” and “From Kabul to Iran say no to dictatorship!”
