British footballer Mason Greenwood was recently granted bail in connection with an alleged sexual assault case. The 20-year-old footballer was accused by a woman of rape over social media. Initially, numerous pictures of the women were being circulated online after the incident came to light, however, they were later taken down guaranteeing lifetime anonymity to the survivors under British law.

The survivor's allegations on social media led to Greenwood being detained by the police for questioning. He has also been suspended by football club Manchester United, who notified that he will not be returning for training or matches until further notice. This move was actually seen as a confirmation of the player's involvement as the police had not named the accused.

The police had stated that the enquiry in connection with the case is going on and the accused had been arrested on suspicion and will be kept in jail and interrogated. However, he was released on bail recently.

- The 20-year-old was arrested on Sunday on the suspicion of raping a woman.

- Greenwood was kept in custody overnight on Monday after detectives were given more time to question the player, whom they have not named.

- In a statement, the force said, "Detectives have been granted further additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman."

- On Tuesday, he was further arrested for making threats to kill.

- On Wednesday, he was released on bail.

- Manchester United had given a statement against the sexual assault of the survivor and suspended Greenwood from training and playing for the club until further notice.

- The club said on Tuesday that it "reiterates its strong condemnation of violence of any kind." It also stated, "As previously communicated Mason Greenwood will not train with or play for, the club until further notice."

- Reportedly the Greater Manchester Police arrested Greenwood after they became aware of the online social media images and videos posted by a woman, who was reporting incidents of physical violence.

- The posts have been deleted from social media as survivors are granted lifelong anonymity under English law.

- After his arrest, video game developer EA Sports said that Greenwood has been removed from the FIFA products. He has also been taken out of active squads in FIFA 22. Along with EA Sports, sportswear company Nike has also suspended its deal with the striker.
