The film, being called an ambitious multilingual project, is a character sketch of actor-turned-politician J Jayalalithaa. The actor's story is a very powerful one that oscillated from glamour to a fierce tale of guarding her political bastion. Jayalalithaa went on to become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

The film will be released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

Ranaut reportedly gained and lost twenty kilos, to play the character at various stages in Jayalalithaa's life. The project, on for a few years now, has seen some other setbacks too. It was supposed to initially premiere in theatres in April this year. Due to rising COVID cases, the premiere was pushed back.

When and Where to watch Thalaivii?

In Southern India, the film in Tamil and Telugu was launched in cinemas on September 10. The Thailaivii team has said it will be only after a theatrical release that the film will hit OTT platforms. The digital premiere of its Hindi version is scheduled on Netflix after just 15 days of its release in cinemas. The Tamil and Telugu versions of the film will release on Prime Video after four weeks.

The Big Fight between Theatres and OTT

There is a general and growing discord between OTT platforms and theatres over online releases of films very close to their premiere in cinemas. Reports say the short gap between theatrical and OTT releases has left many multiplex chains annoyed about potential footfalls. Audiences are willing to give up early watching and wait for films to show up on their home screens via OTT and watch in the comfort of their drawing rooms. Theatres are being forced to run on a 50 percent occupancy thanks to COVID-19 pandemic related protocols and even have had to scale back the window between theatrical and OTT release from eight weeks to four.

With Thalaivii's makers choosing to premiere its Hindi version in just 15 days on OTT multiplex chains like PVR and INOX decided to withhold its screening, releasing just the Tamil and Telugu versions.
