When the Chief Ministerial candidate of the Aam Aadmi Party in Goa Assembly Elections 2o22, Amit Palekar surfaced as the political party's choice for the elections, questions rose on who he is and particularly who is his mother? Palekar is not new to politics, thanks to his mother Jyoti Palekar, who has already served as Sarpanch for Merces village Panchayat.
Jyoti Palekar was the sarpanch there from 2000 to 2007 and also deputy sarpanch from 1997 to 2002. She has had a wide political involvement and has been part of two major political parties in her career as a politician. In an interview with India Today, Amit Palekar spoke about continuing his mother's legacy.
The son of Jyoti Palekar, Amit is also a lawyer and a social worker. They belong to the Bhandari community in Goa. He came under the spotlight for his efforts to provide oxygen cylinders to the patients in need during the coronavirus induced pandemic. The 46-year-old is contesting from St Cruz assembly constituency where the incumbent is from BJP.

St Cruz is his playing field considering his mother has worked in that area and was the former Bharatiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha President. When asked about his mother's ">alliance with BJP and then the shift to AAP, Amit said that no longer can his mother look up to a party that has grown immensely corrupt and lost values over the years, making a clear distinction between old BJP and today's BJP.
Today, during the voting for the Assembly elections in Goa, he went to cast his vote along with his mother, Jyoti Palekar. The news agency ANI reported that Amit Palekar said, "This is our moment to bring a change," while posing with his mother and raising the left hand's finger to show the ink proving that they have cast their votes.
