Veteran Actor Jaya Bachchan Opens Up About Working During Her Period

Veteran actor Jaya Bachchan opened up about the difficulties she faced on set when she was younger in her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda’s podcast What the Hell Navya.

Bachchan began her acting career at the young age of 15 and she worked at a time there were no vanity vans for actors nor facilities at outdoor locations.

When asked by podcast host Navya Naveli Nanda about her first periods, she spoke about how difficult it was to work while she was on her period.

Jaya Bachchan Working During Period

Bachchan spoke about how when she had to go for outside film shoots, they had no vans. The lack of facilities meant that actors had to "change behind the bushes".

Nanda asked, “The sanitary pads?” to which Bachchan replied, “Everything”.

Bachchan added, “There were not even enough toilets. It was awkward and embarrassing”. She revealed that women had to carry around 3-4 sanitary pads in plastic bags that they would discard when they got home.

She spoke about how uncomfortable it was to work during periods and mentioned that back in the day, the sanitary pads were different from the ones used today. Bachchan said, “You didn’t have the kind of sanitary towels that you have today, you just stick it on. You had to make a belt with two ends, towels on had loops, to tie tape to it”.

During the podcast, Bachchan also spoke about menstrual leaves. She mentioned that some people are against women taking menstrual leaves and said, “at the very least, give them one or two days off and ask them to make up the time the time on another day”.

Bachchan added, “Furthermore, some women are not considerate of other women. They must also be considerate”.

Bachchan will be seen in the upcoming film Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani alongside actors Dharmendra, Alia Bhatt, Shabana Azmi, and Ranveer Singh.
