Everything To Know About Gangubai Kathiawadi OTT Release Schedule

In recent few months, theatres were graced with the release of a few big titles like Gangubai Kathiawadi, which managed to draw people to the allure of big screens. The film was released in theatres in February this year, but for the viewers who missed it, the wait for an OTT release will be over very soon.

The Alia Bhatt starter minted big bucks at the box office, a part of which was due to the crackling dialogues like "Gangu chand thi, chand rahegi," that have managed to stay with the viewers. The film is based on the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, written by Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges. It captures the life and struggles of a brothel owner and activist who worked for the rights of sex workers living in the Kamathipura area of Mumbai.

In the film, Gangubai is introduced to viewers as a young girl from Gujarat, whose father is a prominent barrister. She elopes from her house with a lover, who has promised to make her a heroine in the city of dreams. Her favourite actor is Dev Anand, whom she cannot wait to star opposite.

But as fate would have it, she gets deceived by her lover, who sells her at a brothel instead. Unable to return back and escape the brothel, which is run by a madame named Sheela Mausi, played by Seema Pahwa, she transforms from being Ganga to Gangubai. The film then captures how Gangubai climbs through the hierarchy and takes control of the business as well as her life.

The release of the film in theatres had gone through multiple date shifts as they struggled to bring it to the theatres during the pandemic. It also got entangled in legal cases as Gangubai's granddaughter Bharti Sonawane and adopted son Babu Raoji Shah were unhappy with how Bhansali portrayed her. According to them, Gangubai was not a sex worker but an activist who fought for the rights of the sex worker community.

Apart from Bhatt and Pahwa, the cast of the film includes Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, Varun Kapoor and Jim Sarbh, amongst others.
