Alia Bhatt's sister Pooja Bhatt also shared adorable pictures of the birthday girl on Instagram and wrote, "Happy International Alia Bhatt Day!" Despite being cast as the female lead in the blockbuster hit Brahmastra and the critically acclaimed RRR, both films portrayed her as a stereotypical heroine who simply troops along with the male lead throughout his journey.

Yet, over the decade, there have been several films that have contributed to bringing out Bhatt’s potential as an actor to the fullest. On the occasion of Bhatt’s birthday, let us explore the iconic characters that helped her shape her distinguished career and become one of the most sought-after actors in the Indian film industry.

Five Best Roles Of Alia Bhatt

Darlings (2022)

Jasmeet K. Reen’s Darlings features Alia Bhatt as Badrunissa, an innocent and gullible wife who strongly believes that she can change her abusive husband with her love. Alia effortlessly slips into the skin of Badru and makes her feel so real and relatable. Given that being in an abusive marriage is better than being single in Indian society, many of us have been Badrus or know Badrus. That makes the character so relatable and real. Bhatt shines throughout the film, both as a trusting Badru and as a woke Badru who dares to teach her abusive husband a lesson, walks out of a toxic marriage, and turns into an independent woman who builds a life for herself.

Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022)

Whoever doubted Alia Bhatt's potential to play the titular character Gangubai Kathiawadi was hushed to silence. Bhatt played Gangubai, the madam of a brothel in Mumbai’s Kamathipura. The film excels in portraying the transformation of a broken and vulnerable teenage girl, Gangu, into Gangubai, the boss-lady. The journey is filled with challenges from opponents and society, and Gangubai rises above them all and becomes the heroine of Kamathipura. Bhatt’s supreme confidence, gutsy nature, a tiny bit of vulnerability, and rational and impactful dialogues make us root for Gangubai.

Raazi (2018)

In Meghna Gulzar's Raazi, based on Harinder Sikka's novel "Calling Sehmat," Alia Bhatt plays Sehmat Khan Syed, a young woman who marries into a Pakistani army family with the sole purpose of serving as an Indian spy. Despite getting into the marriage as an Indian spy, Sehmat falls in love with her husband. Yet, she sacrifices not just her love but even risks her life for India. Bhatt beautifully portrayed the role of Sehmat, who must walk on eggshells every second of her life, living as an Indian spy in Pakistan. Sehmat’s emotional conflicts of being a patriot and at the same time falling in love with her husband are excellently illustrated by Bhatt.

Dear Zindagi (2016)

Alia Bhatt plays Kiara in Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi. Kiara is in every way a real, raw, and relatable modern Indian woman. The film deals with one of the taboo topics in our country—mental health—with absolute sensitivity. Kiara is a woman who is struggling with trust and abandonment issues owing to her unpleasant childhood. Kiara's unconventionality, being flawed and vulnerable, breaking down to her therapist, and overcoming her issues make the character so authentic. The film is all about Kiara, revolving around her life, her issues, and her journey. Even Shah Rukh Khan, who plays her therapist, is just a part of Kiara’s journey.

In Imtiaz Ali’s Highway, Alia Bhatt plays Veena Tripathi, the daughter of a business tycoon who is abducted by a gang of people. Much to the surprise of the abductors, she reveals that she is loving her new-found freedom and peace. Veera, who is seemingly timid, turns out to be a confident and fierce young woman. From captivating her abductor, sharing a vulnerable moment with him while revealing about being sexually abused as a child, and boldly confronting her abuser, Bhatt owned the film.
