On Wednesday morning, Kumar shared the news on passing of his mother via social media. Remembering his late mother, the actor wrote in his post, "She was my core. And today I feel an unbearable pain at the very core of my existence. My maa Smt Aruna Bhatia peacefully left this world today morning and got reunited with my dad in the other world." Kumar further added that he respected the prayers of his fans and well-wishers as he and his family go through this period.

Bhatia had reportedly been facing health concerns for some time now. In an Instagram post he made in 2019, Kumar was seen strolling with her on the streets of London as she used a wheelchair to move around. "No matter how busy you are with life and growing up, don’t forget they are also growing old...so spend time with them while you still can," he wrote.

A fitness icon himself, Kumar said he was proud of his mother for inculcating yoga practices into her life, "improving one day at a time."

The widow of a Punjabi army man, Bhatia had limited her public appearances for the last few years owing to old age. On social media, however, she often featured on her son's profile while he gushed about her and the significance she held in his life.

On Mother's Day last year, Kumar had dedicated a post to his mother, writing, "Even in this day and age, you’re the only one whose one hand on my head can comfort me in troubled times because I know there’s nothing I can’t do with your blessings maa."

Bhatia too, in interviews, had spoken highly of Kumar and Alka Hiranandani, her two children. "I have never felt lonely since the day they came along, and I've never felt as proud of anything."
