Anand Gandhi, the director of Ship of Theseus, claims that Kantara by Rishab Shetty embraces toxic masculinity. The story of Rishab Shetty's character, a champion in the buffalo race, is followed throughout the movie, which is set in a fictional village in the Dakshina Kannada area of Karnataka. The director claimed in a tweet that Kantara is nothing like his movie Tumbbad. Gandhi served as the movie's creative director and co-writer.

He tweeted, “Kantara is nothing like Tumbbad. My idea behind Tumbbad was to use horror as an allegory of toxic masculinity and parochialism. Kantara is a celebration of these."

Along with Anand Gandhi, Kantara was criticised by director Abhiroop Basu. Basu is known for films such as Laali and Meal. According to him, it makes fun of anyone's intelligence, he told ETimes. No true character to root for, so-called plot twists that are dishonest and just serve as gimmicks, and the protagonist's ridiculous redemption arc, and by the time the movie reaches the much-discussed conclusion, he is longer really interested, he reportedly said.

He continued saying, “But I guess it shouldn’t really be shocking for a film that forces you to believe in ‘divine intervention’ earning aplenty, especially in a time when you are trying hard as a country to prove the scientific relevance of a mythological character. So really, it all fits in.”

Kantara, meanwhile, received a fantastic reception upon its release and proved to be a hit with viewers. Additionally, it did well at the box office. Kantara, a Hombale Films production, has Sapthami Gowda, Achyuth Kumar, Rishab Shetty, and Pramod Shetty in the key parts. On September 30 of this year, Kantara made its theatrical debut. While its Hindi version debuted in theatres on October 14.

Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam versions of Kantara are also available on Amazon Prime for streaming.
