Who is Tashi Yangjom? The mountaineer from Arunachal Pradesh has commenced climbing season on Mount Everest for Indians by becoming the country's first woman to reach the tallest peak in the world. For her feat, Tashi Yangjom is earning praise across the sporting community for persisting despite the impediments prompted by the coronavirus pandemic in India.

Kiren Rijiju, Union Sports Minister, recognised Yangjom's success, tweeting on May 15, "I extend my heartiest congratulations to Ms Tashi Yangjom from Arunachal Pradesh for scaling Mt. Everest & becoming the first Indian woman climber to Everest in 2021."

1. In May 2021, Tashi Yangjom became the first female mountaineer of the year to touch the Everest peak. At over 29,000 feet, it is the highest point on earth.

2. Yangjom began ascent on May 9 and reached the summit in the wee hours of May 11. She completed her trek at 6 am.

3. Yangjom is trained in mountaineering at the National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS) in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh. NIMAS, one of India's most prominent sporting institutes, congratulated Yangjom, saying they were proud of her feat.

4. The Arunachal mountaineer joins the likes of Baljeet Kaur and Gunbala Sharma, women who have been lauded for recent mountaineering feats in the Himalayas in the face of a raging pandemic.

5. Early May, however, was rife with fear at the Everest base camp, after officials raised the alarm of an uptick in COVID-19 cases. The Everest base camp, at 17598 feet, is highly isolated and the possibility of an outbreak in harsh weather conditions is keeping authorities alert.
