Jhulan Goswami To Retire From Cricket Post England Tour

The veteran Indian cricketer Jhulan Goswami plans to retire from international cricket, after playing the third and final ODI of the England tour on September 24. It will be a farewell game of fast bowler Goswami.

A top BCCI official mentioned that the third One-Day International against England at Lord's will be Jhulan Goswami's last game. Goswami retires from the game as one of the highest wicket-taker in women's internationals, with 352 wickets in all formats. She broke the record of Australian cricketer Cathryn Fitzpatrick to become the highest wicket-taker in women's ODI history.

Goswami, 39, last played in blue jersey in New Zealand in March Goswami did not play at Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. She was also missing from a Sri Lanka tour in July. According to a board official, BCCI wanted to give Goswami a farewell match, for her to bid a proper goodbye on the field. She hasn't played T20Is Since 2018 did not play T20I and her last Test match was in October 2021.

It is speculated that Post-retirement Goswami plans to explore the inaugural women's IPL, scheduled for March 2023. Further, also in discussions for a mentoring role with a men's IPL team. Currently, she is mentoring the Bengal women's team for the upcoming domestic season. She will also be playing in the season's matches.

Jhulan Goswami Retirement

Jhulan Nishit Goswami was born in Nadia, Bengal. Goswami made her international debut in 2002. She played for over two decades representing India in 12 Tests, 201 ODIs, 68 T20I, and featured in six 50-over World Cups. Goswami's glorious records made her the face of Indian women’s cricket. Goswami was named vice-captain of the national team in 2006 following the tour of England. Her leadership helped India to win the Test series.

She has also contributed to mentoring the fast bowlers coming through the ranks in India and inspired many of them. For example- Meghna Singh, India’s frontline bowler sees Jhulan Goswami as a mentor.

Goswami won the ICC Women's Player of Year in 2007. Goswami also has the prestigious Arjuna Award and Padma Shri to her name.
