Deepika Kumari World No 1: Star Indian archer Deepika Kumari became the world number one as per World Archery rankings revealed on Monday. Kumari regained the number one position in global rankings among women archers following her triple gold medal triumphant at the World Cup Stage 3 in Paris on Sunday.
The 27-year-old from Ranchi defeated Elena Osipova of Russia by 6-0 on June 27. This is Kumari's second individual World Cup Gold medal of 2021 and the third gold of the day. She had earlier won gold in the women's team and mixed team event as well on Sunday. Kumari first teamed up with Ankita Bhakat and Komalika Bari to notch up the women's recurve team gold with a comfortable win over Mexico for team India. Her next pairing with husband Atanu Das turned out to be a successful one when the couple came back from a 0-2 deficit to down the Netherlands' Sjef van den Berg and Gabriela Schloesser 5-3 for the gold medal. The Ranchi archer then outperformed 17th-ranked Russian Elena Osipova 6-0 to cap a perfect three out of three in the recurve women's section, her fourth individual World Cup gold medal.
Archer Deepika Kumari world No 1: Overall, Kumari has nine gold, 12 silver and seven bronze medals at the World Cup.
Olympic-bound Kumari had achieved the world No. 1 spot for the first time in 2012. "This is going to take Deepika to the number one spot in the world rankings on Monday," World Archery had tweeted on its official handle after Kumari's gold rush in the French capital.
“I am happy, but at the same time, I have to continue my performance like this. I want to improve that, because the upcoming tournament is very, very important to us. I am trying my best to continue learning whatever I can," the official website of World Archery quoted Kumari as saying.
Kumari is now looking forward to the upcoming tournament, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which are less than a month away. She will represent India as the loan female archer in Japan. She will be joining the men's archery team as they strive to win the country's first archery medal at the world's biggest sporting event.
Kumari, a top-ranked woman archer, is a rickshaw driver’s daughter. She remains to be the ace archer from Jharkhand and is a big bet for bringing home a medal this year. Actor Kangana Ranaut shared a post about Deepika Kumari while hailing her recent performance on her Instagram Stories. She wrote, "Wow best archer in the world has to be from the land of Lord Rama. Congratulations Deepika Ji," along with the Indian flag and celebratory emoticons.
