Tanvi Chordia Jain narrates: "All my life I had lived in Pune, while Pratik was from a small town in Coimbatore; a place I didn’t know much about. But I have always been very open to the idea of trusting what comes my way. So with COVID-19 at its peak, I decided to give it a chance & meet the guy on a zoom call. Surprisingly we hit it off the minute we started talking. Soon, we talked to our parents & ended up having a big fat Indian wedding but with only 150 guests a month later.

I was always sure of Pratik, but after meeting his family, I was even more confident about my decision to get married into a smaller town I had never travelled to before. The food, the weather, the language; everything was different in Erode, but it still felt like home. Every little concern of mine has been taken care of since the day I got married. I remember my father in law telling my parents “she will never miss home.” From feeding me with his own hands to not stopping me from wearing whatever I wanted to; he made sure I never had to adjust into a bahu’s role.

Women usually aren’t allowed to work in our community after marriage but he made sure I continued to work after marriage. “Mai tera kaam karna kabhi band nahi hone dunga” he had said when he set up a separate cabin for me in his office. But this treatment wasn’t just limited to me. It is how everyone in my family is. Me & my sister-in-law, we both are extremely pampered in the family. She is studying psychology now, even after being married for 12 years.

Since I got married, I haven’t gotten the chance to go meet my parents. I missed them a lot and so did they. Here’s how my Father-in-Law squeezed in an “unofficial” trip to Pune with his “official” business trip so I could surprise my family. The community where I come from, women are not allowed to be a certain way after marriage, but thanks to my father in law, my conservative family members have also become more accepting. It might sound too good to be true but I think I have been extremely lucky when it comes to family."
