Man Masturbates In Delhi Metro : I Am Not Shocked! It's A Routine

Recently, a video of a man watching something on his phone and masturbating on Delhi's metro train went viral. It was an indecent act in the public space, yet no one dared to shut the man. Chief of the Delhi Commission for Women, Swati Maliwal, called the act incident "disgusting" and "sickening." But what next? It may be disgusting, but do we really care?

Delhi Man Masturbates In Metro

Since the video went viral everybody is criticising and questioning why people around did not call out on the person. In fact, choose to maintain distance, sit elsewhere, or record the obscene act. Why it is shocking for people that no one called on him? Why it is not digestible something like this can happen in public?

Delhi has the highest record of crimes against women, most of which have taken place in public places. But no one dares to confront it or come to the rescue of a vulnerable person in this heinous situation. In the Nirbhaya rape case too, when the victim was reportedly thrown out off the bus, she was left on the road with hardly any piece of cloth on her. If the cruelty is of this level, and people can still neglect what goes around them, then why we are still expecting that will come to the rescue and play the role of responsible citizen?

I personally experienced why Delhi is worst for women and I stand by this fact because men are worst. I am not a trash-talking men, I genuinely drew the conclusion from the experience. Recently, I visited Delhi twice. Every time I had an episode, where my safety was compromised in broad daylight. Let's get with my story. I was heading to Gurgaon via metro around 11 am, a decent-looking man got a seat next to me. Something from my back was poking him, and that became our talking point. I apologized and got back to my laptop.

He initiated a conversation, I started speaking to him, meanwhile, I received a work call. Which did not go down well with the man sitting next to me. As he was more interested in having a conversation with me. He started forcing me to continue talking to him and give second priority to the call I received. When I said no, he started uttering nonsense about character. He literally said, "logo ko dhoke mein mat rakho", I was confused. The situation escalated and he started abusing me. I fought back, we were having a loud spat, and people were watching the drama. Some aunty was constantly staring, a young college group avoided the whole spat and were discussing music. An uncle was watching, as if he knew where this gonna head, but decided to stay steady. None of them came to help and say something to the man who was harassing me.

Trust me, I was scared to death. First, it was a new city for me, I hardly knew people there. Second, something like this was happening for the first time. Last, I had no idea how to react to such a situation, where the stranger is harassing you because you did not speak to him.

During that time, I felt vulnerable, I was numb. Clueless, how to react or how to respond. It is easy to say, do this, do that but when the situation comes, you become numb. Your senses don't work, the brain is unable to send signals. In the end, as I raised my voice, the man left the metro.

I was shocked about what just happened to me, I was harassed and abused, and at the same time, no one came to help. I now get it- Why do women in Delhi avoid speaking to a stranger, Why do women feel insecure and unsafe in Delhi? Given the scenario, it is not a shocker that no one gave a damn about a man masturbating in the metro.
