The way we think about careers is changing. For years, the “traditional” path was clear: get a degree, secure a job, and steadily climb the ladder. But Gen-Z is rewriting that script. Instead of relying solely on one career path, many are pursuing side hustles, freelancing, and even launching small businesses alongside school or internships.
Gen Z and side hustle culture
This generation is deeply entrepreneurial. With digital tools at their fingertips, opportunities are everywhere. A simple Instagram page can become the start of a brand, a Reel can showcase talents, and freelancers can showcase platforms like Etsy, Behance or Fiverr, making it easier to sell skills and services.
For many, side hustles are less about quick cash and more about independence, flexibility, and creating multiple paths forward instead of relying on just one job.
Take my friend Tanisha, for example. She’s building her portfolio as a makeup artist while still in college. On weekends, she takes on freelance clients, and during the week, she curates her work online. What started as a passion is now helping her gain real experience, build a client base, and explore entrepreneurship skills, no degree alone could fully prepare her for.
Stories like hers are everywhere, from students running small thrift businesses on Instagram to those tutoring, baking, or designing to support themselves and grow their dreams.
This movement also highlights a shift in how we view education and work. Degrees are valuable, but they’re no longer the only way to define a career. Side hustles teach lessons in marketing, time management, problem-solving, and resilience.
Juggling internships, college, and small businesses isn’t easy, but it gives young people an edge by showing that they can adapt, multitask, and create opportunities in uncertain times.
Burnout Factor
Of course, the hustle and bustle has its downsides. Balancing too much at once can lead to burnout, and the pressure to constantly stay “productive” takes a toll. Yet even with the challenges, many see side hustles as worth it.
They offer financial independence, confidence, and the freedom to try new things that might not be possible within the boundaries of a traditional job.
The bigger picture? Side hustles are shaping a future workforce that’s more flexible, creative, and less defined by old rules. Gen Z isn’t waiting for opportunities to come their way; they’re building them, testing ideas, and carving out paths that blend passion with livelihood.
Careers are no longer limited to what’s printed on a degree; they’re being redefined by ambition, skills, and the courage to create something new.
