Women’s team wins silver: Snapshot of India in women’s archery

Indian women’s team headed by Deepika Kumari won a silver medal after losing the gold to Chinese Taipei at 2-6 at the Archery World Cup Stage I happening at the Yuanshen Stadium, Shanghai on May 1. After a comeback match defeating the top-seed Germans at 5-3, this was the final bout played by Deepika, Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi where their inconsistent game led to winning silver. Nevertheless, the team has still one major event- Olympics left for them to prove their spectacular game. They made the cut for Olympics last year in July during the World Championship in Copenhagen.

Here are some quick facts about the Indian women’s archery team:

  • The team is headed by Deepika who is from Ranchi. She is the second female archer from West Bengal after Dola Banerjee. She is also touted as the world no. 1 archer. This will be the second time Deepika will be going for Olympics. First time she went for the London Olympics in 2012.
  • This is the first time the women’s team got selected for the Olympics this year and the men’s team could not make a cut.

  • This year’s South Asian Games was completely taken over by the Indian women’s team. The Compound Women’s category made the high score of 2048 points while the second team was Bangladesh scoring 1970 points.
  • The Indian women’s team which lost to Chinese Taipei in this year’s World Cup stage I in the gold medal match, actually won over it in the stage III of World Cup in 2013 and claimed the gold medal. The team then included Rimil Buriuly, Bombayla and Deepika.
  • The same team of Rimil Buriuly, Bombayla and Deepika also consecutively won the stage IV of World Cup 2013 in Poland against the heavy competitor Koreans.
