The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made a historic comeback in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, securing a decisive victory after 27 years. A key factor behind the BJP’s success was its overwhelming support among women voters, who played a pivotal role in shaping the electoral outcome. Delhi cast its votes on February 5, and the results of the elections were declared on February 8, 2025.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), 60.92% of the 72.37 lakh registered women voters cast their votes in the Delhi Elections 2025, as compared to 60.21% of the male population. It was for the first time in Delhi, that the turnout of women surpassed that of men in the Assembly elections.
As Per the Election Commission of India
In several constituencies, it was seen that the women's voting percentage was significantly higher than men’s, for instance:
Okhla: 5.73 percentage points higher
Burari: 1.78 percentage points higher
Adarsh Nagar: 1.69 percentage points higher
Timarpur: 0.64 percentage points higher
There is a total of 70 Assembly Constituencies in Delhi. Women constitute more than 46% of Delhi's Electorate. As per the data released by the Election Commission of India on Friday, the percentage turnout of women was higher than that of men in 40 constituencies including several constituencies in South, Southeast, Central, Northwest and Southwest Delhi.
In two constituencies - Greater Kailash and Vishwas Nagar - the turnout of men and women was the same.
What Does the Trend Say?
Overtime, it has been seen that the proportion of women voters has been increasing as compared to their share in the electorate, and as per official data, in the 2020 elections, it almost equalled that of men.
Women have outvoted men in the past. It is believed that their support is a crucial deciding factor in Elections. Due to which, in the lead-up to the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025, major political parties have made significant promises to women voters, including monthly cash incentives and welfare schemes.
Incentives Offered to Women:
The BJP’s resounding success in Delhi was fueled by its women-centric welfare schemes, particularly with the Mahila Samriddhi Yojna promising women Rs 2,500 per month, Rs 21,000 for pregnant women, and increased pensions for widows and senior citizens. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured that women will start receiving Rs 2,500 by International Women's Day.
Other major promises included a ₹500 LPG cylinder subsidy for poor women, one free gas cylinder per year on Holi and Diwali, and six nutritional kits annually for women.
Women voters played a crucial role in the recent Delhi elections, thus their preference in Delhi can be considered as one of the deciding factor in the 2025 Assembly elections.
