Former Indian women hockey captain, Waikhom Suraj Lata Devi filed a domestic violence complaint with the police on Wednesday, February 19, 2020.

Former Indian women hockey captain, Waikhom Suraj Lata Devi has filed a domestic violence complaint with the police. She has alleged that her husband physically assaulted and mentally tortured her, adding that he has been harassing her since the beginning of their marriage in 2005. According to Waikhom, dowry was the main reason behind this harassment.

Waikhom finally took the decision to file a complaint when her husband assaulted her at Kapurthala in Punjab in November 2019. As per The Quint, she was officiating an event organized by the Rail Coach Factory in Sultanpur Lodhi. She said, "I never wanted the matter to become public. However, there is always a limit to someone’s patience and tolerance." At first, an FIR was registered with the Manipur Police in January.  Later the complaint was forwarded to Sultanpur Lodhi as the incident of assault took place there.

She has also alleged that her husband Shanta Singh ridiculed her when she brought all the medals and photos that she had won on the day of her marriage and had remarked what use would they serve?  Her husband has now been booked under various sections of the IPC, including Sec 498-A. The hockey player also said that she was withstanding the violence in the hope that her husband would change.

Waikhom Suraj Lata Devi is the former captain of the Indian Women's Hockey Team. Born on January 3, 1981, Suraj Lata Devi hails from Manipur. Under her captaincy, the team won three gold medals in three consecutive years.  First, the team won a gold medal at 2002 Commonwealth games under captaincy. In 2003 the team won another gold at the AFRO games. Further, in 2004, The team won another gold at the Hockey Asia Cup. The team also won a bronze medal at the 2002 Champions challenge under her captaincy. The team's 2002 Commonwealth games inspired the making of the hit Bollywood film Chak De India.
