The woman who accused MP Atul Rai in a sexual assault case set herself along with a man on fire outside of the Supreme Court. She also made a social media live stream of self-immolation. She was accused in a forgery case by Atul Rai's brother Pawan Kumar.

Here's what we know about the rape and forgery case so far

  • A woman had accused the Bahujan Samaj Party Member of Parliament Atul Rai in a sexual assault case. According to reports, Rai had allegedly raped the 24-year-old woman for over a year. He reportedly had a video of her which he used to blackmail her saying that he would circulate it on social media.
  • In connection to the sexual assault case, the MP had been in jail since June 2019.
  • MP Atul Rai's brother, Pawan Kumar, had filed a complaint against the woman in a forgery case. According to the complaint, she had forged documents to "hide her date of birth". Kumar said that the woman's date of birth in her marksheet was different when he filed a complaint against Atul Rai and a student leader in 2015.
  • She was accused under sections 419 (cheating by personation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy), among others.
  • The woman who accused MP Atul Rai reportedly "remained untraceable despite several raids". After this, a non-bailable warrant was issued against her.
  • The woman set herself and a man on fire outside of the Supreme Court after introducing herself as the "rape victim". She also posted the self-immolation in a Facebook live video. In the video, she is also seen claiming that the UP Police tried to defame her by trying to prove that she is characterless in order to save Rai.
  • A senior Police officer of Delhi Police said in a statement, "We are trying to ascertain their relationship with each other. They have suffered severe burn injuries and aren’t in a position to give a statement yet."
  • The National Commission for Women took cognizance of the incident involving the woman and man who set themselves ablaze in front of the Supreme Court. The Commission has also sought a report from Delhi CP.
