A video in which a woman, identified as Kanta Devi is seen thrashing her mother-in-law has gone viral. This incident was recorded by a school girl on her cell phone.

In the video, one can see Kanta Devi thrashing and pulling her mother-in-law Chand Bai by her hair. Chand Bai is a widow and has completed 80 years of life. The video surfaced online, where people could witness the brutal act.

Once the police received information regarding this, officials, which included women officers reached the spot. Chand Bai was taken in for a medical exam and the police have said that investigations are underway.

Narnaul DSP (headquarters), Vinod Kumar spoke about the incident, said, “We asked the victim and she told us that she was beaten up by her daughter-in-law. We have seen the video which shows the brutal act. The medical examination of the woman has also been conducted and we are waiting for its report. The accused has fled from her home and efforts are being made to arrest her at the earliest.” the DSP added.

Kanta Devi has been booked under sections 323 and 506 of the IPC (Indian Penal Code). The sections she was booked under stand for - punishment for voluntarily causing hurt and punishment for criminal intimidation respectively.

Meanwhile, Vipin, the son of the accused Kanta Devi has confirmed that even his mother had thrashed his grandmother.

In the video, people can see the accused Kanta Devi asking her 80-year-old mother-in-law to take care of herself and not depend on them. A police official also said that Kanta Devi beat her up mother-in-law if failed to take care of herself. Additionally, “She wanted to get Rs 30,000 which the victim drew as widow’s pension,” added the official.

Since then, Kanta Devi has been arrested on Saturday morning.

Such instances show that at times, women are enemies of other women. To reduce patriarchy the first step would be to be supportive and helpful of each other. One can hope that Kanta Devi will understand her wrongful behaviour.
