If you've ever eaten spicy food, you know that it can make you cough a little. You probably weren't aware, that in extreme circumstances, coughing brought on by spicy food can actually result in bone fractures. An example would be a Chinese woman from Shanghai who, while coughing from spicy food, broke no less than four ribs because she was too skinny and had poorly developed muscles.

Huang reported that she had been eating spicy food, which had at one point started her coughing, to doctors in her hometown of Shanghai. The young woman allegedly heard a loud crack from her chest area during a particularly strained cough, and she immediately felt pain when trying to breathe and speak.

Huang said, "I didn't expect it to hurt this badly; at first, I thought it was a stroke or something. I was unable to even walk." A CT scan at a nearby hospital revealed that Huang had four fractured ribs after she managed to reach there. Doctors performed a bone density test after hearing the woman's account of her coughing, and the results were normal. A thoracic surgeon examined the woman and performed additional tests before coming to the conclusion that the woman's weak muscles were to blame for the bone fractures.

The doctor reportedly told her, "Under your skin, your ribs are clearly visible. The doctor reportedly informed Huang that unless she takes action, she is likely to experience similar fractures in the future because there is no muscle to support the bone."

The young woman acknowledged having a very thin upper body and claimed to be 171 cm tall and 57 kg in weight. She now needs to rest and wear a medicinal corset around her torso for a month, but after that, she intends to gain weight and build muscle.
