20-year-old Sultana Khatun was in class 11th at Tildanga High School when she was married off to daily wage labourer Bunty Sheikh in 2022. She decided to continue her studies after marriage which her in-laws supported initially but for the last few months, they said that they were having financial troubles and can't afford her studies anymore, forcing her to discontinue her studies.

However, Khatun didn't give in and started preparing for her class 12th board exams. On March 15 her in-laws and husband locked her in a room to prevent her from studying and giving the exam.

Khatun had already appeared for her first exam but her husband and in-laws did not want her to continue her studies. She managed to reach her parents' house, however, she realised that her uniform and admit card were at her husband's house.

She asked the Farakka police for help. The police went to her in-laws' house but found it locked, they were unable to contact the in-laws despite several attempts and decided to reach out to the headmaster of the school which was her examination centre.

The headmaster, Md. Monirul Islam of New Farakka High School informed that since she had attended the first exam of English on March 14, her name was on a roll and hence, she would be able to give her Political Science exam on March 18.

After she gave her exam on Saturday, her in-laws refused to let her in their home but they returned her uniform and books. The police said that they were trying to convince the family to dilute the dispute.
