Haryana BJP leader and actress Sonali Phogat died of a heart attack in Goa at the age of 42.

Actor turned BJP leader Sonali Phogat passed away on August 22 in Goa. She was 42. Phogat who had gone to Goa with some of her employees, was rushed to hospital, after she complained of uneasiness. She lost her husband in 2016 and is survived by her parents, a brother and a daughter named, Yashodhara.

Her death, earlier suspected to have been caused by a heart attack, is now being treated as a murder and two of her associates have been arrested by the Anjuna police. "There are multiple blunt force injuries over the body. In view of the above, the manner of death is for the investigating officer to ascertain," the post-mortem report revealed.

Phogat, who contested the last assembly election in Haryana, had posted a new profile picture on her social media accounts roughly 12 hours before she died.

Who Was Sonali Phogat?

Sonali Phogat was born in a farmer’s family in Hisar, Haryana. Her parents married her off after she completed 10th grade. She once revealed that her husband always supported her when she wanted to pursue acting and get into politics.

Sonali Phogat rose to fame with her TikTok videos and had a huge following on the video-sharing app. She debuted as a TV anchor in 2006 before joining the BJP two years later. She went on to become the national vice president of BJP’s Maliha Morcha and also headed the party’s tribe wing in several states like Haryana, Delhi, and Chandigarh.

Phogat made her acting debut with a TV serial called Ek Maa Jo Laakhon Ke Liye Bani Amma in 2016. She also acted in a Haryanvi film Chhoriyan Chhoron S Kam Nahi Hoti. Her last film appearance was in a web series called The Story Of Badmashgarh (2019). She also participated in the 2020 edition of reality show Bigg Boss. Her other stints include anchoring for Hisar Doordarshan and an appearance in “The Story of Badmashgarh” directed by Ameet Choudhary.

Phogat contested the 2019 Haryana election from Adampur as a BJP candidate. She lost to Kuldeep Bishnoi, who was the Congress candidate.

Condoling her death, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar tweeted, “Received very sad news of the sudden demise of BJP leader Sonali Phogat ji. May God rest the departed soul at his feet and give strength to the bereaved family members to bear this immense loss.”

The BJP’s district president in Hisar, Capt Bhupender, stated, “She was with some of her associates in Goa. We heard about an hour ago that she suffered a cardiac-arrest and passed away in the wee hours. Certain formalities are being completed there at Goa, after which her body shall be brought to Haryana”.
