Irma Garcia, was one of the two teachers who was killed while saving lives, along with 18 students, at the mass shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday. On May 27, 2022, two days after her death, Irma Garcia's husband Joe Garcia, who was her high school sweetheart, reportedly died from a heart attack. Although the family members called his cause of death, a “medical emergency.”

The details of the death were revealed by Irma's cousin Debra Austin on the GoFundMe page. Before Joe’s heart attack, a Houston news station KHOU-TV reported that journalists had seen Joe dropping flowers at a cross with his wife’s name on it.

Irma Garcia who was shot, died while she was sheltering students from the shooter, Salvador Ramos. It is reported that Irma and Joe Garcia were high school sweethearts, and were together for 30 years since, married for 24 years. Revealing the news her cousin stated-, “I truly believe Joe died of a broken heart and losing the love of his life…was too much to bear,” The couple’s nephew John Martinez tweeted, “My Tia Irma and Joe Garcia were high school sweethearts and leave behind 4 beautiful children, their ages being 23, 19, 15 and the young only being 13 years old, no child should have to go through this, my heart breaks for them.”

She had joyfully added, "I love to BBQ with my husband, listen to music, and take country cruises to Concan' I have my eldest, Cristian, completing Marine boot camp and another son Jose attending Texas State University. My eldest daughter Liliana will be a sophomore in high school and my youngest Alysandra will be a 7th grader this year."

Irma Garcia (48) and Joe Garcia (50), have passed away in the span of two days, leaving behind four young children from their 24 years of marriage. Teachers Garcia and Mireles have been praised for their selfless bravery as they were seen trying to shelter their students from the bullets, putting their own lives at cost.
