Sameer Wankhede first wife: In the ongoing Maharashtra row involving allegations against Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB)'s zonal director Sameer Wankhede, the name of his first wife, Dr Shabana Qureshi, has come to light. NCP leader Nawab Malik, launching attacks against Wankhede, claims he fraudulently obtained a fake birth and caste certificate to secure a government job.

In a statement, Wankhede has said his father is a Hindu and his mother, now deceased, was a Muslim. He has denied allegations of fraud against him and said he is ready to face a probe.
"I want to make it clear that the issue I am exposing of Sameer Dawood Wankhede is not about his religion... he has obtained a caste certificate to get an IRS job and has deprived a deserving Scheduled Caste person of his future," Malik said in a press conference.

Wankhede said he married Dr Qureshi in 2006 under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. It was his mother's wish that the marriage be conducted per Muslim customs, he told reporters. Wankhede and his wife "divorced mutually" under the law in 2016 and a year later, he married Redkar.
Malik has published a copy of what is he claims to be Wankhede's "nikah nama" with Dr Qureshi. Hitting back, Wankhede said publishing his personal documents was "defamatory in nature" and is intended to malign his family. Malik holds a "personal vendetta" against him, Wankhede said, since the time a relative of the minister was arrested in a drugs investigation.

As quoted by ANI, Wankhede's father said the family is facing "life threats" due to the ongoing controversy. "I am a Dalit, how can my son be Muslim? My wife was Muslim," he said.
