Nitika is the wife of martyred Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal who lost his life during the Pulwama Attacks in Jammu and Kashmir in February 2019. They had been married for only nine months when she lost him to the attack of terrorists. The couple had married in April, the year before.

The 28-year-old wife lost her husband 34-year-old husband in the attacks on Februrary 17,2019.

After losing her husband, she decided to join the Indian Army to commemorate the sacrifice made by her husband. In the year 2020, she passed the necessary Short Service Commission (SSC) examination and the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview.

“When I wrote the exam and gave the interview, I could feel what he would have felt when he wrote his SSC. I connected with him, his fears and his anxiety. Somehow that gave me strength.” She said.

Ever since that, she has been waiting to join the merit list and become a part of the army. She completed her army training at Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai and cleared all the formalities as well.

“I worked very hard to qualify. Now I want to excel in the one year of training. I want to be an officer who everyone can be proud of, Vibhu can be proud of.” She said before starting her training.

Dhoundiyal is all set to join the Indian army as Lieutenant Nitika Kaul Dhoundiyal on May 29,2021.

She has shown great courage and valour while paying respects to her husbands asking the people to be strong and not sympathetic.

Nitika left her MNC job in Delhi to join the army in memory of her husband.

“The interview board asked me how long I was married. I said, ‘two years’. They said, ‘But we heard you both were married for nine months…’. I said, ‘Vibhu is not here physically but that doesn't mean our marriage has ended’.” She recalled.
