Who is Nikhil Jain? The Kolkata-based businessman and Trinamool Congress politician Nusrat Jahan on Wednesday addressed their marriage with explosive revelations. Putting speculations of divorce to rest, Jahan in a statement said the couple's "separation happened long back" and that questions of a divorce did not arise since their marriage is allegedly not valid in India.

Jahan says since theirs "was an interfaith marriage, it requires validation under Special Marriage Act in India, which did not happen. As per the court of law, it is not a Marriage, but a relationship or a live-in relationship... The alleged marriage is not legal, valid and tenable; and thus, was not a marriage at all in the eye of law." See her statement here.

The two had tied the knot in 2019 in Turkey after reportedly dating for a brief period. Jahan claims they married under Turkish Marriage Regulation.

Without commenting on Jahan's remarks about their relationship, Jain said in an interview that the couple has been separated since November last year and he has filed for an annulment in Kolkata. "I don't really want to comment on anything she's said because the matter is sub judice in court," he added.

The key difference between an annulment and divorce is the initial validity of the relationship in question. Annulment involves legal proceedings to declare an invalid marriage void, while divorce recognises the existence of a valid marriage that is breaking up.

Nikhil Jain belongs to a business family associated most notably with the Rangoli Sarees brand. He, along with parents Mohan and Shakuntala Jain, are named as directors of the company, with shops spread predominantly across Kolkata.

It was through a shoot for his brand that Jain came to know of Jahan, he revealed in an interview with The Telegraph soon after the couple got hitched. "We were launching a Rangoli store in Gariahat and the marketing team guys gave her name... once we started talking about who we should get, she was topping the list… how popular she is and what kind of films she is doing… we had to get her on board," he said.

"I asked him to have lunch with me. Someone had told me that he had broken up with his girlfriend," Jahan added in the same interview, saying their relationship progressed from there. The duo gushed about being supportive of each other despite their busy schedules.

Jahan is an actor with several Bengali films including Shotru, Khiladi, and Power to her credit. She joined politics in 2019 contesting and winning from Basirhat constituency on a Trinamool ticket.

While in her statement, Jahan doesn't name Jain, she alludes to alleged mishandling of funds and financial disagreements. "In the past, details of all family Accounts were handed over to him, upon his requests and none of me or my family members was aware of any Instructions given to the Bank via. Our Accounts. He has also been mishandling my funds from various accounts without my knowledge," she says, adding that she will file a police complaint shortly.

Amid rumours of Jahan's alleged romantic link to actor Yash Dasgupta, there was fan speculation about a pregnancy. Some local reports quoting Jain have said the businessman does not have knowledge about Jahan being pregnant from their relationship.
